Getting Started
Follow these simple steps to count words, characters, and more:
- Step 1: Switch to the Utility tab at the top of the page.
- Step 2: Type directly into the text area, or paste content from any source — a document, email, essay, or social media draft.
- Step 3: View your results instantly. Word count, character count, sentence count, paragraph count, and estimated reading time all update in real time as you type.
- Step 4: Click Count Words at any time to manually refresh the statistics.
What We Count
The word counter tool tracks six key metrics to give you a complete text analysis:
- Words — Sequences of characters separated by whitespace. Handles multiple spaces, tabs, and newlines correctly.
- Characters — Total character count including spaces, giving you the full length of your text.
- Characters (no spaces) — Character count excluding all whitespace, useful for platforms that ignore spaces.
- Sentences — Groups of text ending with periods, exclamation marks, question marks, or ellipses.
- Paragraphs — Blocks of text separated by blank lines, helping you gauge document structure.
- Reading Time — Estimated time to read your text at an average speed of 200 words per minute.
Text Transformations
Use the transformation toolbar above the text area to quickly change the case or formatting of your text:
- UPPER CASE — Converts all letters to uppercase.
- lower case — Converts all letters to lowercase.
- Title Case — Capitalizes the first letter of each word.
- Sentence case — Capitalizes only the first letter of each sentence.
- AlTeRnAtInG — Alternates between uppercase and lowercase letters.
- tOGGLE — Swaps the case of every letter (uppercase becomes lowercase and vice versa).
- Remove Extra Spaces — Strips duplicate spaces, leaving only single spaces between words.
Character Limit Tracker
Need to stay within a platform's character limit? Select a preset to see how many characters you have remaining:
- X (Twitter) — 280 characters per post.
- Instagram — 125 characters for captions that display without truncation.
- YouTube Title — 100 characters for video titles.
- Reddit Title — 300 characters for post titles.
The remaining-character counter updates in real time, so you always know exactly how much space you have left.
